My Commitment to You
Tropical cacti growing in sandy tropical garden

I wholeheartedly affirm and respect the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals. I strive to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where all humans are welcomed and valued.

I honor the full spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations. I am committed to providing affirming and supportive nutrition therapy for individuals within the LGBTIAQ+ community.

Acknowledging the inherent privileges afforded to me by society, I continuously strive to cultivate cultural humility and awareness in my counseling work. I am committed to ongoing introspection and self-examination so I can show up for clients as authentically and effectively as possible.

As a fat-positive, anti-diet dietitian, I stand firmly against the pressures of diet culture and am dedicated to promoting body liberation for all individuals irrespective of size or shape.

My counseling style is guided by the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES)® , and is dedicated to empowering individuals to cultivate a respectful relationship with food, movement, and their bodies.

My nutrition recommendations are informed by intuitive eating principles, body respect, and self-care practices that honor each person’s unique needs and experiences.

Your story, voice, and autonomy matter deeply to me, and I am committed to partnering with you in a respectful and collaborative manner. While aiming to provide the best support possible, I recognize my humanity and acknowledge that I am not immune to mistakes. I approach each client interaction with humility and openness, embracing the opportunity for growth and learning from both successes and challenges along the way.

I like to say that I’m in my “diet-culture-dropout” era thanks to Lauren. I’ve been on a dieting rollercoaster since my early teens and felt lost for an exhausting number of years. Lauren is warm, humble, and will [graciously] hold you accountable for challenging unhelpful beliefs. Talking with her feels like chatting with a friend who also just happens to be a nutrition genius!!

Welcome! I’m so happy you’re here.

Clients describe me as warm, approachable, and fiercely devoted to helping people live joyful and fulfilling lives. The foundation of my counseling style is partnership; built on the mutual understanding that, much like the diverse landscapes of nature, we have individualized needs to thrive in our unique environments, bodies, and lives. Together, we’ll identify specific strategies to help you holistically nourish your whole self. More specifically, we’ll explore how to implement and sustain healthy nutrition and exercise behaviors that align with your personal values and guide you to your healthiest self.

Why the name ‘Nutrition Elevated’?

The name “Nutrition Elevated” symbolizes the healing power of nature and embodies the innate connection between nourishment, and a higher, elevated state of being. Here in Washington, we are surrounded by lush landscapes and breathtaking mountain ranges. Our work together is a metaphoric climb of these mountains; mirroring the personal ascent clients undertake when exploring their relationship to food. It’s both challenging and rewarding; and the view from the top? Life-changing.

Navigating Exercise Paradoxes

As a life-long athlete, fitness instructor, and eating disorder expert, I am intimately aware of the paradoxes that exist in our exercise culture. Some of these paradoxes include: exercise for punishment vs. self-care; quantitative vs. qualitative outcomes; and intensity vs. recovery. I explore many of these paradoxes in sessions with clients, and understand the delicate balance of holding two truths at the same time: exercise offers transformative benefits to our mental and physical health – and – it can lead to excessive strain, emotional distress, and disruptions in daily functioning. Because of the latter, I will never push or encourage a client to exercise for weight-centric ‘health’ benefits. My role is to sit with clients as they explore their relationship with, and motivations for exercise, and what type(s) of movement, if any, feels joyful to them.

For fun…

I spend the majority of my time outside: climbing, mountaineering, skiing/snowboarding, and backpacking in the PNW. Nature is my sanctuary, a source of tranquility that rejuvenates my spirit. It offers a simplicity that encourages mindfulness and a deeper connection with the world. Creating art and my support system (i.e. my friends, family, partner, and two cats Tahoe and Timon) are the other lights of life.

What is disordered eating?

Often, people struggling with disordered eating symptoms may downplay their struggles, thinking they’re not severe enough to seek extra support. In a culture where dieting and disordered eating are normalized, it can be challenging to recognize that you deserve support.

Symptoms of disordered eating may include:

  • Experiencing feelings of guilt or shame after eating certain foods.
  • Following rigid food rules and strict eating schedules.
  • Excessively planning meals and constantly thinking about food.
  • Engaging in frequent dieting, fasting, or extreme calorie restriction.
  • Feeling body dissatisfaction based on size, shape, or weight.
  • Engaging in body-checking behaviors such as frequent weighing and mirror checks.
  • Compulsively exercising to burn calories or achieve an ideal body shape.

To “ditch diet culture” means…

…to reject societal pressures and harmful beliefs surrounding food, weight, and body image. It involves embracing intuitive eating, promoting body acceptance, and prioritizing holistic well-being over restrictive dieting practices.

I help clients to:

  • Break free from harmful dieting practices
  • Develop a healthier relationship with food and body image
  • Let go of restrictive diets
  • Challenge societal beauty standards
  • Embrace intuitive eating principles
  • Fostering self-compassion, body acceptance, and mindful eating habits
  • Reclaim their well-being and cultivate a positive mindset towards food and self-care

What is it?

Eating disorder nutrition therapy offers a compassionate and tailored approach to healing one’s relationship with food. Rooted in empathy and understanding, treatment focuses on restoring physical health, nurturing emotional well-being, and fostering a healthier mindset towards nutrition.

I treat the following:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive eating is an evidence-based approach to eating that encourages individuals to listen to their body’s natural hunger and fullness cues, reject restrictive diets and food rules, and make peace with food. Potential benefits include:

  • Healthier Relationship with Food: Listen to your body’s cues for a more positive eating experience.
  • Heightened Body Awareness: Understand your body’s needs and preferences better.
  • Reduced Stress: Let go of dieting guilt and enjoy food more freely.
  • Better Mental Health: Improve your mindset around food and body image.
  • Sustainable Habits: Embrace a long-term, balanced approach to nutrition.

What is attunement?

Body attunement means tuning into your body’s signals, like hunger and emotions, and responding intuitively. It’s about listening to your body’s wisdom and fostering a harmonious relationship between mind and body through practices like mindfulness and intuitive eating.

What is weight-inclusive nutrition support?

My approach to nutrition counseling is guided by the Health At Every Size® framework of care and the definition of health described by the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH).

In sessions, I strive to create a non-judgmental environment that respects individuals’ autonomy and dignity regardless of their body size. Rather than prescribing or focusing on weight loss, I hope to foster improving holistic health behaviors that enhance overall wellbeing.

This approach challenges weight stigma and discrimination, acknowledges the limitations and ineffectiveness of traditional weight-focused interventions, and promotes a more inclusive and compassionate model of care that embraces body diversity.

I hope to empower clients to reclaim their health journey on their own terms, free from judgment and societal pressures.

My personal journey with ADHD has deepened my empathy, insight, and interest in the intersection between neurodiversity and nutrition challenges.

ADHD and eating challenges may include:

  • Impulsivity and Binge Eating: ADHD individuals may struggle with impulsivity, leading to binge eating episodes.
  • Attention Difficulties: Individuals with ADHD may struggle with maintaining attention and focus, which can affect their eating habits, making it challenging to stay focused on meal times or to plan and prepare nutritious meals.
  • Impaired Interoception: Interoception, the ability to perceive internal bodily sensations like hunger and fullness, may be impaired in individuals with ADHD, making it challenging for them to recognize and respond to their body’s signals for hunger and satiety.
  • Co-Occurrence with Eating Disorders: Research suggests that individuals with ADHD are at a higher risk of developing eating disorders
  • Inattentiveness and Meal Planning: Executive functioning challenges can hinder regular meal planning and preparation.
  • Hyperfocus and Restrictive Eating: Some ADHD individuals may hyperfocus on restrictive eating patterns or food rules.
  • Forgetfulness and Meal Skipping: Forgetfulness may result in skipping meals or irregular eating habits.
  • Medication Side Effects: ADHD medications may cause appetite changes and affect eating habits.
  • Emotional Dysregulation: ADHD is associated with difficulties in emotional regulation, which can lead to using food as a coping mechanism for managing stress, anxiety, or other uncomfortable emotions.

With a deep and personal understanding of the physical and mental demands of outdoor activities, I bring a unique blend of personal experience and professional expertise when helping individuals optimize their nutrition to enhance performance, endurance, and enjoyment during their adventures

Services offered include:

  • Customized Meal Plans: Tailored nutrition plans to meet the specific needs of clients based on factors like duration, intensity, and type of outdoor activity.
  • Nutrient Timing Education: Guidance on eating for performance before, during, and after outdoor activities.
  • Education on Nutrient Timing: Guidance on recommended intake before, during, and after outdoor activities to optimize energy levels, hydration, and recovery.
  • Portable Snack Ideas: Lightweight, nutrient-dense snacks for sustained energy during outdoor adventures.
  • Hydration Strategies: Recommendations for fluid balance, electrolytes, and dehydration signs during outdoor activities.
  • Environmental Factors: Education on how environmental factors such as altitude, temperature, and terrain can impact nutritional needs, and how to adapt a nutrition plan accordingly.

Orthorexia nervosa is a condition characterized by an obsession with eating foods perceived as healthy.

Symptoms of orthorexia include:

  • Obsessive Focus on Food Quality: Constant fixation on food quality, purity, and origin, resulting in strict dietary rules.
  • Extreme Guilt or Anxiety Surrounding Food Choices: Feeling intense guilt, anxiety, or self-judgment when unable to stick to self-imposed dietary guidelines.
  • Social Isolation: Avoiding social events involving food due to fear of consuming “unhealthy” or “impure” foods.
  • Physical Symptoms: Showing signs of malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies due to restrictive eating patterns.
  • Negative Impact on Quality of Life: Decline in overall well-being, relationships, and mental health due to obsession with food purity and restrictive eating.

What is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)?

RED-S is a condition that describes the health complications and performance issues resulting from inadequate energy intake relative to energy expenditure in athletes. RED-S can affect athletes of all sexes across various sports and levels of competition.

I did not expect to learn this much about myself, and how to prioritize my own needs (i.e. nutrition needs) so that I can be a better mom and business owner. Lauren helped me understand that being well is not about getting the “correct” amount of grams of nutrients or setting rigid goals that may lead to self-doubt and an endless cycle of arbitrary goal setting. Through working with her, I learned that if I slow down a bit and listen to my body, I can better be aware of hunger cues; I can choose small ways of eating the foods I want to eat to feel my best and happiest self (it doesn’t have to be a lavish recipe), and that choosing to take care of my body in simple, intuitive ways is an important act of self-love.

Kind words from clients

I wanted to thank you for all of your support and guidance throughout my recovery, you were such a vital piece of my recovery team and I am so grateful and proud of the work I was able to do with you!! Your work is life changing and the world needs many more Lauren’s to fight eating disorders with the incredible approach that you do. I truly cannot thank you enough!!!!

Lauren: words cannot describe how thankful I am to have found you. I truly cannot thank you enough for having trust and faith in me and pushing me to be better. I owe you my health and honestly, I owe you my life. I never thought that I could have a new outlook on life and nutrition and it was all thanks to you.

-Former Client

You are the kindest, loveliest person to talk to and you always say just the right thing. I would always joke to my therapist that I felt like I was “cured” after our meetings because your advice and insight was so valuable in combatting my ED. Thank you so so much for your support and your role in my recovery. Wherever you go and whoever you help, they will be so lucky to work with you.

Lauren is an excellent nutritionist. Her care, compassion, tenderness, along with her professionalism and knowledge got us through the most difficult and challenging times during our daughter’s recovery process. We could not have done this without her and we are so blessed to have had such a phenomenal provider like her. Our angel in disguise.
